Our Story

History

1934: Gus & Anna opened Gus’s Quassaick Bar & Grill! They owned a building with an apartment upstairs where they lived and rented the downstairs storefront to Schaffer’s Grocery Store. After the crash and great depression, the grocery store shut its doors and Gus & Anna saw the opportunity to open a local eatery. They stuck to what they knew, baking our famous rye bread daily, butchering their own meat, and mastering what became time honored traditional recipes from Germany and Vienna, Austria.

1949: Route 9W was being rerouted to where it is today. The restaurant building was in the way and fell within the domain of the state and became an obstruction to the construction progress of Route 9W. The building was demolished and Gus & Anna rented a new location to continue running the restaurant while the new building was being built.

1950’s: Gus’s Restaurant & Tavern opened in its new building, a post war modernist-mid century brick building with large windows, a flat top roof and one of the few places to offer “air-conditioning”!

1964: Gus & Anna retire and sell their restaurant to their son and daughter in law. After 30 years Anna hung up her apron, but Gus stuck by his son Richard “Gus” Ostner’s side to help with butchering and the daily tasks of running the business until 1976

1981: Richard and Linda buy the restaurant and take over as 3rd generation and run the restaurant until 2025. During their time they added new menu items, began off premise catering, started making their own bratwurst and held an annual Oktoberfest celebration.

2025: Gus & Anna’s great granddaughter Lauren takes a chance and steps into the footsteps of the 3 generations before her. Making sure quality food is served in a casual atmosphere with great specials is what Gus’s is all about!

A note from the owner:
To so many generations of great customer we are your local, neighborhood eatery with a blended menu of German & American Food. We are not all German, and we are not all American when we plan our menu. It is important to us to stick to our roots and provide our families tried and true German favorites as well as offering alternate items so everyone has an option. Everything on our menu is made by our talented team and family. What does that mean? Well, we are going to run out of menu items! Yes, it happens. It’s our philosophy to keep things fresh and to provide the best quality food. We believe in creating, not ordering processed food from a major distributor that comes from their freezer to ours to then be reheated for your “enjoyment”. When a restaurant kitchen can “do better” for its customers, why not? That is our goal. To serve a diversified menu of quality food at a reasonable price. We look forward to being your home away from home for many more lunches and dinners!
